..towards a greener and more responsible future

Two Oceans Aquarium and Sappi launched a newly constructed

seal platform into the yacht marine adjacent to the Aquarium

this week. The platform is in aid of the Cape fur seals living in

the V&A Waterfront and was funded through income generated

from a live concert by renowned singer and environmentalist

The platform will assist Aquarium staff in their efforts to

disentangle seals which have nooses or straps cutting into

their necks.

raffia cord which have found their way into the water as a result of human negligence. If left

unattended, the nooses get tighter and cut deeper into the flesh, causing serious and sometimes

life-threatening wounds.

While the seal team has developed several methods, including snorkelling beneath the piers where

the affected seals are basking in the sun and snipping the nooses, sometimes a seal is so badly

injured that it is preferable to restrain the animal in order to cut the noose. The platform will enable

the team to ‘gate' an injured seal so that they can work more quickly and effectively on the animal.

The platform will also help the Aquarium educate visitors about seals and the impacts of pollution

Green Season's Greetings!

It's that time of year to think back on the year's successes and

make plans for 2011!

South Africa survived the World Cup and even surprised its

harshest critics! A tough act to follow – but with tourism figures

up and our hosting of COP 17 next year there's a lot to look

forward to.

The Heritage team would like to wish you and your families

safe and happy holidays and a green New Year! We will be

closed from the15th of December until the 10th of January 2011
